ABC Countdown to the Last Day of School: Letter Tt is Toy Day

Letter Tt is for Toy Day!

Toy Day in Kindergarten is a wonderful opportunity for children to share their favourite toys, engage in imaginative play, and learn important social skills. Let’s listen to this song called, “The Marvelous Toy”.

What questions do you have about toys?

  • How are toys invented?
  • How are toys made?
  • Who can make toys?

Show and Tell

Show a toy to your friends and tell them about it. What does it do? What do you like about it?

Can you build a toy with a piece of paper?

Let’s make a paper airplane! Watch how to fold this airplane. Try it yourself! How did it fly?

Stories About Toys

Let’s Practice the Letter Tt!

Here are ten more fun ideas to make Toy Day memorable:

  1. Show and Tell: Invite children to bring one of their favourite toys from home to share with the class during show and tell. Encourage them to talk about why they love their toy and how they like to play with it.
  2. Toy Swap: Organize a toy swap where children can bring in a toy they no longer play with and trade it with a classmate. This promotes sharing and teaches children about the joy of giving and receiving.
  3. Parade: Have a toy parade around the classroom or schoolyard where children can show off their favourite toys. Encourage them to march proudly and talk about why their toy is special to them.
  4. Storytime: Read books about toys, such as “The Velveteen Rabbit” by Margery Williams or “Corduroy” by Don Freeman. Discuss the stories and the importance of imagination and friendship.
  5. Toy-themed Art: Set up art stations where children can create drawings or paintings of their favourite toys. Provide a variety of art supplies like crayons, markers, and colored pencils for them to use.
  6. Exploration Stations: Set up different play stations with toys like building blocks, dolls, cars, and puzzles. Encourage children to explore and play with different toys, fostering creativity and social interaction.
  7. Story Writing: Have children write or dictate stories about their favourite toys. They can describe adventures, create characters, and use their imaginations to bring their stories to life.
  8. Science Experiments: Conduct simple science experiments using toys as the subject. For example, children can experiment with different surfaces for cars to roll on or investigate which materials make the best building blocks.
  9. Theater: Create a toy theater using cardboard boxes or a large table. Children can use puppets or action figures to put on their own puppet shows or plays for their classmates.
  10. Clean-Up Crew: Teach children the importance of taking care of their toys by organizing a toy clean-up crew. Assign tasks like sorting toys, wiping them down, and putting them away neatly.

These activities promote sharing, creativity, and imaginative play, while also teaching children valuable lessons about responsibility and friendship. Toy Day is a day for children to celebrate their favourite toys and the joy they bring to their lives.
