ABC Countdown to the Last Day of School: Letter Ff is for Family Day

Letter Ff is for Family Day!

Today in our ABC Countdown: Family Day! Bring a picture of your family to share with our class.
Let’s make a graph. How many people are in your family?

What is a family? We’ll brainstorm what we know about families.

Here’s a song about some of the people who might be in your family.

Let’s write in our journals. Families spend time together. They do many things together. What special memories do you have with your family? Draw a picture of your family and write a sentence about what you like to do together.

ABC Countdown: Family Day Storytime

Let;s read a story from one of our favourite authors, Todd Parr. This story is called, “The Family Book”.

Here’s another story about families. It’s called, “All Kinds of Families” by Mary Ann Hoberman.

Here are ten more heartwarming and engaging ideas for celebrating our ABC Countdown: Family Day in Kindergarten:

  1. Family Tree Craft: Have children create their own family trees using construction paper, markers, and photos or drawings of family members. This helps them understand their family structure and appreciate their relatives.
  2. Family Portraits: Provide materials for children to draw or paint portraits of their families. They can include parents, siblings, grandparents, pets, and anyone else they consider family.
  3. Show and Tell: Organize a special show-and-tell where children bring in a favorite family photo or an item that represents their family. They can share stories and explain why the item is special to them.
  4. Family Storytime: Invite parents, grandparents, or other family members to read their favorite children’s books to the class. This creates a connection between home and school and encourages a love of reading.
  5. Family Recipes: Ask families to share simple, favorite recipes. Compile these into a class “Family Recipe Book” that each child can take home. You could also have a snack time where children bring in and share treats made from these recipes.
  6. Collaborative Family Art: Send home a large piece of paper with each child and ask them to create a piece of art with their family. When they bring the art back to school, display the pieces in the classroom or hallway.
  7. Family Dance Party: Invite families to a special dance party in the classroom or school gym. Play a variety of fun, family-friendly music and encourage everyone to dance together.
  8. Family Games: Organize a day of games and activities that families can play together. This could include board games, simple sports, or cooperative games like parachute play.
  9. Family Interview Project: Have children interview a family member using simple questions about their childhood, favorite memories, and hobbies. They can present their findings to the class or create a booklet of family stories.
  10. Gratitude Jar: Create a “Family Gratitude Jar” where children can write or draw things they are thankful for about their family on slips of paper. They can share these during a circle time and reflect on the importance of family.
