Storytime: Squirrel’s New Years Resolution

Happy New Years! Let’s talk about new years resolutions. Do you make them? Do you talk to your kids about them?

As much as I love Christmas and decorations and the business of the holiday season, I also love the fresh start of the new year.

Making resolutions is a great way to teach children about setting goals. Today’s story explains what a resolution is and gives great examples of ways we can improve ourselves and help others.

Think about your own New Year’s resolution as you listen to “Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution” by Pat Miller. Enjoy! (Scroll down after the story for free follow-up activities.)

Did you enjoy the story? Why do you think people make resolutions when we start a new year?

Free New Years Resolution Activities

After reading the story, “Squirrel’s New Year’s Resolution”, use the cards in this freebie to put the events of the story in the correct order.

For younger children who are learning to write, this free colouring page with a sentence starter at the bottom is a fun way to welcome to new year.

Children who are ready to write a little bit more will love this free package. It has great activities for reflecting on the past year and setting goals for the new year.

Making a Vision Board

A vision board is a collection of pictures and words in collage form that shows your dreams and hopes for the future. You can make one digitally in PowerPoint or Google Slides by inserting pictures and text. Or you can use magazines, printed pictures, and flyers to cut and paste pictures and words onto your vision board.

Here is a video example of a mom who made one with her daughter.

I hope you enjoyed the story. I hope it inspired some great goal-setting conversations with your family. Happy New Years!
