Best Winter Clothing for Kids
Winter is just around the corner, and you know what that means – it’s time to bundle up your little ones in winter clothing. As the days get shorter and the temperature drops, we understand the importance of keeping your kids warm and comfortable while they play outside or head out to school. As a former Kindergarten teacher and parent of two Canadian kids who love the outdoors (and are rough on clothing), I’ll be your trusted guide in navigating the world of winter gear for kids, offering tips, suggestions, and some fantastic affiliate-linked finds to help you and your little snow explorers stay snug this season. So, grab a hot cup of cocoa, get comfy, and let’s dive into the wonderful world of winter attire for our Canadian kiddos! ❄️🧒👧🏂
The best winter clothing for kids has to be durable, warm, and waterproof. There are days when they have to stand up to rain, hail, snow, and wind.
First up…
Winter Hats and Balaclavas for Kids
These Magarrow Balaclavas are my sons’ favourite hats. They call them ninja hats and sometimes sneak around inside the house in them. They’re great quality, adjustable, and WARM. This balaclava is warm enough for the coldest winter days. The mask part can be pulled down under the chin.
- 2 layers of thick fleece
- Covers face, nose, cheeks, ears, neck
- Adjustable mask area and brim
Waterproof Mittens for Kids
Mittens have to be warm, waterproof, and durable to survive a winter with our kids.
They have to be long enough to tuck over or under sleeves with NO zippers. (They never work and they’re too difficult for small, cold fingers.)
They need to be reinforced with durable fabric on the palm, thumb, and fingertips.
They need to have elastics at the sleeve to keep snow out.
These ones from MCTi are sherpa-lined and are snuggly warm. They come in 4 different sizes and 4 different colours.
These Kombi Everyday Mitts are THE BEST for older kids. They have less of a toddler-mitten look. They’re not cheap but they are the best quality, longest lasting mitts we’ve owned. We can make it through two full years with one pair where most others have lasted one.
- 4 different sizes
- Durable fabric
- Quality construction
- Warm
My older kid prefers gloves. These ones are thick and well-insulated.
They also have adult-sized mittens that I love for yard-duty and days at the ski hill.
Best Snowsuits for Kids
Are you looking for a new snowsuit for your little one? If so, you may want to consider a one piece suit. One piece suits are becoming increasingly popular, and for good reason – they’re warm, comfortable and practical. But there is one more reason why one piece suits make the best choice for kids this winter.
The zipper is always started.
If you’re a Kindergarten teacher, a class full of students in one-piece snowsuits is a dream. When you’re stuffed like the Michelin man and can’t feel your frozen fingers, zipping snowpants and then a coat is nearly impossible.
My all-time favourite one-piece snowsuit is the Cloud All in One Waterproof Snowsuit from Mountain Warehouse. It’s often on sale for $69.99 and comes in sizes from 24 months to size 6X-8.
My kids have worn every size. I’m not an affiliate – I just LOVE this suit. It comes in a few colours and patterns.
Best Winter Boots for Kids
Bogs are our favourite winter boots. While they’re not the #1 warmest boot out there, thick socks go a long way and my kids have never complained about cold feet.
What we love about them:
- Easy slip on with pull handles
- No liners
- Warm enough with thicker socks
- Cool enough for spring and fall
- Durable
- Retains secondhand value
Tips for Bogs: Keep the insides dry by wrapping the elastic on your snowpants right over them.
Prices change for different sizes and colours.
