ABC Countdown to the Last Day of School: Letter D is for Day Off Day

D is for Day Off Day!

Monday is Day Off Day. This weekend is a long weekend because Monday is Victoria Day. The holiday is named after Queen Victoria, who was the Queen of England in the 1800s. In Canada, people still celebrate Queen Victoria’s birthday every year with barbecues, camping, picnics, and fireworks.

Here is a fireworks show at the Disney World castle. Maybe this weekend you can have a picnic with your family (even in your backyard or living room!) and watch the fireworks. What snacks could you pack that start with the letter D?

In case it’s not a holiday:

Here are ten fun and relaxing ideas for a “Day Off Day” in Kindergarten, designed to give kids a break from the usual routine while still engaging them in enjoyable activities:

  1. Pajama Party: Let the kids come to school in their pajamas and bring their favorite stuffed animal or blanket. Set up cozy corners with pillows and blankets for a day of relaxation.
  2. Movie Time: Show a favorite children’s movie or a series of short, age-appropriate films. Provide popcorn and juice boxes for a real movie theater experience.
  3. Storytime Marathon: Have a series of storytimes throughout the day with different themes. Invite guest readers like parents, teachers, or older students to read to the class.
  4. Outdoor Picnic: Weather permitting, take the class outside for a picnic lunch. Bring along picnic blankets and enjoy a leisurely meal followed by some free playtime.
  5. Art and Craft Stations: Set up various craft stations with different materials (stickers, stamps, beads, pipe cleaners) and let the children rotate through them, creating whatever they wish.
  6. Dance Party: Play fun, kid-friendly music and let the kids dance around the classroom. Include some musical games like freeze dance to keep them entertained.
  7. Sensory Play: Set up sensory bins with items like sand, water beads, rice, or playdough. Let the kids explore different textures and engage in open-ended play.
  8. Nature Walk: Take a walk around the school grounds or a nearby park. Encourage the kids to observe nature, collect leaves or small rocks, and simply enjoy being outside.
  9. Board Games and Puzzles: Provide a variety of board games and puzzles for the kids to play with. This can be a great way for them to relax and work together.
  10. Mindfulness and Relaxation: Introduce simple mindfulness activities such as deep breathing exercises, gentle yoga, or guided relaxation sessions. Use soft music and dimmed lights to create a calming atmosphere.

Let’s practice the Letter D!
