ABC Countdown to the Last Day of School: Letter Hh is for Halloween Day

Letter Hh is for Halloween Day!

Wear a costume if you’d like! Could you make a mask?

We will learn about bats.

Let’s meet Ronan, the baby bat.

We’ll write down some facts that we remember about bats. What surprised you?
Now let’s learn how to draw a bat.

We will listen to this story, called “Stellaluna”. The person who reads the story uses her voice to make some parts really exciting. She uses expression. It makes the story more interesting to listen to.

We’ll write a spooooky story together. We’ll need to remember all of the parts of a story: characters, setting, beginning, middle, and end. Maybe we’ll even read our story by flashlight!

Here are ten fun and spooky ideas for celebrating Halloween Day in Kindergarten:

  1. Costume Parade: Organize a costume parade where children can show off their Halloween costumes. Create a designated route through the classroom or school, and invite parents to watch and take pictures.
  2. Pumpkin Decorating: Provide small pumpkins and various decorating supplies like markers, stickers, and paint. Children can decorate their pumpkins without the need for carving, making it safe and fun.
  3. Halloween Storytime: Read age-appropriate Halloween books such as “Room on the Broom” by Julia Donaldson or “The Little Old Lady Who Was Not Afraid of Anything” by Linda Williams. Discuss the stories and the characters with the children.
  4. Monster Mash Dance Party: Play fun Halloween-themed music like “Monster Mash” or “Thriller” and let the kids dance around. Incorporate some freeze dance games to keep it exciting.
  5. Halloween Crafts: Set up craft stations where children can make Halloween-themed crafts like paper plate masks, bat hats, or ghost puppets using construction paper, googly eyes, and other craft materials.
  6. Trick-or-Treating: Organize an indoor trick-or-treating activity where children visit different stations or classrooms to collect treats. Ensure all treats are safe and allergy-friendly.
  7. Spooky Sensory Bins: Create sensory bins with Halloween-themed items like plastic spiders, fake eyeballs, and colored rice or pasta. Let the children explore and discover hidden “treasures.”
  8. Pin the Hat on the Witch: Adapt the classic “Pin the Tail on the Donkey” game with a Halloween twist. Blindfolded children try to pin a paper hat onto a large picture of a witch.
  9. Halloween Bingo: Create bingo cards with Halloween images like pumpkins, bats, ghosts, and black cats. Play a game of bingo and offer small prizes or stickers for winners.
  10. Pumpkin Bowling: Set up a bowling game using small pumpkins as bowling balls and empty cans decorated as ghosts or monsters as pins. This activity combines fun and motor skills.

Let’s practice the Letter H!
