ABC Countdown to the Last Day of School: Letter Ww is Water Day

Letter Ww is Water Day in Kindergarten!

Water Day in Kindergarten can be an exciting and educational experience, providing opportunities for hands-on learning and fun. Here are ten engaging ideas to make Water Day memorable:

  1. Water Play Stations: Set up different water play stations with activities like water tables, sensory bins filled with water and toys, and bubble-making stations. Include various tools like cups, funnels, and sponges for exploration.
  2. Water Science Experiments: Conduct simple water experiments, such as sinking and floating tests with various objects, exploring water density with saltwater versus freshwater, and observing water evaporation.
  3. Splash Art: Create water-themed art projects using watercolors, spray bottles filled with colored water, or painting with ice cubes made from colored water. Let the children explore different techniques and create their own masterpieces.
  4. Water Relay Races: Organize relay races where children must carry water in cups or sponges from one bucket to another without spilling. This promotes teamwork, coordination, and physical activity.
  5. Water Cycle Exploration: Teach children about the water cycle with a simple demonstration. Use a clear plastic bag, water, and a sunny window to show evaporation and condensation. Discuss the stages of the water cycle.
  6. Storytime with Water Books: Read books about water, such as “A Drop Around the World” by Barbara McKinney or “All the Water in the World” by George Ella Lyon. Discuss the importance of water in our lives and the environment.
  7. Fishing Game: Set up a “fishing” game using a kiddie pool or large container filled with water and toy fish. Provide children with small fishing nets or rods with magnets to “catch” the fish. This activity improves hand-eye coordination and fine motor skills.
  8. Water Music: Create water-based musical instruments, such as filling glasses with different levels of water to produce various tones. Let children experiment with tapping the glasses and making music.
  9. Boat Building: Provide materials like aluminum foil, corks, and plastic containers for children to build their own boats. Test the boats in a water table or kiddie pool to see if they float and how much weight they can hold.
  10. Water Safety Discussion: Teach children about water safety, including the importance of never playing near water without an adult, learning to swim, and wearing life jackets when boating.

Science Activities for Water Day in Kindergarten

Let’s Read About Water!

Where does water come from?
How does water get to your house?

This video will teach us about the water cycle. A cycle means it goes around and around. Let’s find out how water goes around and around in the water cycle.

Let’s do a science experiment!

You’ll need to fill a sink with some water. We’re going to find out which objects sink and which ones float on top of the water. Choose 5-10 different objects to test. Try to choose some that you’re pretty sure will float, some that you’re pretty sure will sink, and some that you’re not sure about.

Can you build a boat that will float? What materials can you use? Check your recycling bin.
