Community Helper Books

Today we were talking about “pandemic fatigue” in the staffroom. Do you remember in the early days of the pandemic when people were banging pots and pans at night to show appreciation for essential workers?

If you’re a parent, do you remember the suggestions for daily schedules and endless streams of resources for teaching your child from home?

It’s been over a year now and a lot has changed, but I hope that our appreciation for the work that our essential workers do is here to stay.

Learning about Community Helpers in Kindergarten felt different this time around. I loved that each of these books has a thank you letter written to the community helpers at the end. They also have good diversity in the pictures and nice, clear explanations of the jobs.

After we read one of the books, students were invited to colour this colouring page to thank essential workers. On the back, they wrote a short thank you note to a group of essential workers.

We also used parts of this nonfiction resource. It’s aligned with the Grade 1 curriculum but there are may overlaps with the Kindergarten curriculum. It has great visuals for helping kids understand what a community is.
