My Morning Routine
This is a tough time. Everyone is busy. The weather is changing. Waking up for a morning routine is tough in the dark. We’re getting weary from the “training stages” of Kindergarten. And reports are just around the corner.
So today on the blog, I’m doing something a little bit different. We all hear about the importance of self-care but it seems like another thing to add to our never-ending to-do list. I’m a full time Kindergarten teacher and a mom of two young boys. “Me time” doesn’t happen easily or often. After work we’re straight into the rush of dinner, lunch prep, clean up, bedtime routines, and then… I collapse into a heap. I don’t have the energy at that point in the day to do anything.
Recently, I listened to Episode 217 of the Rachel Hollis Podcast – Building a Morning Routine as a Spiritual Practice. Not too far in, she suggested I wake up an hour earlier than I think I need to and she almost lost me, but I kept listening and then actually tried it.
Here are some of her recommendations:
- Your “morning routine” might not happen first thing in the morning, depending on the season of life you’re in. For example, if you have an infant, chances are your morning routine might happen during the first nap of the day.
- Journal to find out what you need in the morning: Peace? Energy?
- Wake up one hour earlier than you think you need to and use your time intentionally for self-care.
- Go to bed earlier so your body is ready to wake up without an alarm. When your body wakes up naturally, don’t go back to sleep for a little bit longer because you’ll push yourself into a sleep cycle you won’t have time to finish.
- Build in pieces that have meaning to you: movement, mindfulness meditation, warm beverage, comfy spot, journaling, dance, etc.
- If you have children, get yourself ready so you can prepare to help them have a great morning routine too. Put on relaxing music. Greet them from a place of calmness and help them start the day in a positive way.
My Morning Routine
My alarm is set for 6am, just in case, but I wake up between 4:45 and 5:15am. (I go to bed by 9pm.) I turn on the kettle and make myself a cup of tea. I sit in my favourite spot on the couch and let myself wake slowly… I’m bored already, my tea doesn’t taste good, and I woke the kids up accidentally.
Have a great day, everyone!
