Mono Cliffs Provincial Park, Ontario

Throughout the COVID-19 pandemic we’ve felt very fortunate to be able to send the kids out the door to the backyard. Even so, we’ve been craving new scenery and new adventures. After the announcement that Ontario Provincial Parks would be re-opening, we looked at the map and decided to visit an old favourite – Mono Cliffs Provincial Park.

We went on a weekend, soon after the park opened. Most people were headed in the same direction on the trails so we saw very few people. By the time we left by around 11:30 a.m., there was a steady flow of people coming in.

We walked part of the Bruce Trail within the park. Climbing the mountain of stairs and then a hill was a fun challenge for the kids, who made it look a lot easier than we did. The view from the top of the escarpment is beautiful and there is a board with information you can pretend to read while you catch your breath.

Besides finding little treasures like birch bark and moss, the kids’ highlights were floating stick boats down the river and climbing down the stairs in between the rock walls.

Visits During Covid-19

Take precautions to keep your family safe. Check the Ontario Parks website for up-to-date information. Our advice is to go early in the morning when the park is less busy. We also planned to be home again before bathroom breaks were necessary. Some people were wearing masks. At the beginning of our hike, there were no other people around, but as we were leaving, masks would have been a smart move. Bringing them along wouldn’t hurt.

Stay safe and healthy!
