9 Activities for Learning About Syllables
Chunky Monkey is one of our Reading Strategy friends. She tells us to look for chunks of words that we know when we’re reading.
Parts of words are called syllables.
1. Watch this video.
2. Clap the names of your family members to see how many syllables they have.
3. Listen to Clap it Out and dance and clap along!
4. Find ten objects and clap out their syllables (e.g., banana – 3 claps – ba-na-na).
5. Watch Mrs. Bacchus and her sons sort words by syllables.
6. With a family member, make your own chart and sort the words by how many syllables they have.
7. Find a word with a LOT of syllables.
8. Math connection: use counters (cheerios, blocks, buttons, bread tags) to show how many syllables are in each object/word.
