May will be a busy month! Here are some important dates:
May 7 – Jump Rope for Heart (Pledge forms due.)
May 10 – Growing in Faith Through the Arts Show – 9:15 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
May 10 – Grade 1 Scientist in the School – 11:20 a.m. – 2:30 p.m. (Note to come. Parent volunteers needed.)
May 20 – No School
May 22 – Grade 2 Scientist in the School – 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. (Note to come. Parent volunteers needed.)
May 24 – School Mass, led by Grade 2 students – 9:15 a.m.
May 24 – First Communion Breakfast – 12:55 p.m. – 1:55 p.m.
News:
Congratulations to our Grade 2 students who received their First Holy Communion on Saturday! The Grade 2s will have the opportunity to lead the school in Mass on May 24th in the gym. All are invited to share in the celebration of the Mass.
Language Arts:
We are reading Fairy Tales and are exploring the features of Narrative texts. Students are also learning to write narratives. We have been writing personal narratives in our journals for most of the year, and will begin to write our own Fairy Tales. We will also dig deeper into the writing process.
Week 30 will be the final week of new spelling activities on spellingcity.com. From then on, we will be reviewing our word wall words for the year. I will leave the lists posted through the summer months for continued practice.
Math:
Our new unit is called Linear Measurement, Area, and Perimeter and we will be comparing, estimating, and ordering lengths. We will use a number of non-standard unit of measurement (hands, paper clips, cubes) as well as standard units (centimetres, metres). Grade 1s will then focus on estimating and comparing areas, while Grade 2s will learn about area and the “distance around” objects (perimeter). May is the month of Mary, and we will be learning songs and stories about Mary. We will also discuss diversity and recognize human contributions to our world.
