Kindergarten Long Range Plans for Mathematics

The foundation of the Ontario Kindergarten program is play-based, child-centred learning. Kindergarten teachers are advised to be flexible with the curriculum and focus on students’ interests and developing a lifelong love of learning. Effective educators know that it’s important to lay out long-term plans for increasing student learning in certain content areas like Mathematics, even if plans change to follow students’ interests.

Here are a few notes about these long range plans:

– You’ll notice that concepts are revisited. Learning takes repetition over time.

– My school has a majority population of English Language Learners (or Emergent Bilinguals). Therefore I save many of the units that require challenging vocabulary, such as 3D solids, until the 2nd term.

– Some of these units might last 3 days while others last 3 weeks, depending on the needs of my students.

The following are the math units I teach in each Term. Some units are linked to my TeachersPayTeachers store

You can find a bundle of these Kindergarten Math units here. They’re in Google Slides format so they work great for virtual teaching or in-class lessons with a projector or SMARTboard. I use them as Math Talks before we begin to play or explore math centres.

I hope this is helpful in planning your own math units. If you have any questions, let me know in the comments here or on social media (links at the top of the page).
