2D Shape Games

Virtual Manipulatives
Using manipulatives or math tools helps students learn and understand new concepts. There are lots of different virtual manipulatives out there, so I’m going to share some of my favorites with you. At the time of this posting, all are free with no ads or minimal ads.
These virtual pattern blocks match the real ones we use in school. They’re great for sharing with parents, making virtual pictures using shapes, and exploring in group lessons.
These virtual geoboards have elastics you can stretch over the pegs to create shapes. What happens when you make a triangle and then stretch one side over another peg? Can you make a shape that matches your partner’s?
Polypad from Mathigon has a wide variety of shapes. They’re great for sorting and categorizing, especially for older primary students.
Online 2D Shape Games
Some of these games would be great to open on an iPad or computer in the classroom during play. Read below to find out some of my favourites.
ABCYa has a number of games for children to play, related to shapes. This site has great games but I find students need to be monitored very closely while playing because it’s not full screen and they tend to click elsewhere accidentally. Try Shape Construction, Shape and Color Bingo, or Dungeon Dash.
PBS Kids has good games for younger learners. Here are a bunch of their games about shapes.
This simple but effective game asks kids to find the shapes hidden in the picture.
Free Printable Games on TPT
Games are a great way to introduce math concepts during play in the Kindergarten classroom. The games below are all free and made by teachers who share them on TeachersPayTeachers.
You just need a paperclip and pencil to play this Spin and Cover game.
This bright, colourful Bingo game will be popular with your learners!
For a whole class lesson, play Guess the Shape with this set of Powerpoint slides or Google Slides.
Here’s a memory game that would be great for younger children to practice matching the shapes.

Colours and Shapes Bingo (affiliate link)
Snug as a Bug in a Rug (affiliate link) is a game from the highly reputable game makers, Peaceable Kingdom. It’s a cooperative game where kids have to work together to beat the game by counting and matching shapes and colours.
My Ready-to-Teach Lessons
This mini-unit about 2D shapes is a set of Google Slides lessons. They are great for math talks about shapes and they include a review game.
These printable worksheets are a perfect companion for the lessons and help students practice key skills in fun ways. They focus on circles, triangles, squares, and rectangles.
