Teacher Tools
Classroom Management 101: Get students’ attention without using your voice. Hang these cute and calming wind chimes just out of students’ reach in a central place.
For an option that you can have on a lanyard or clipped to your clothing, try out a wireless doorbell.
Add it to this teacher lanyard with your ID badge and a tiny laminated copy of your schedule.
This portable document camera is an easy, plug and play device.
I benefit from using a timer as much as my students do. This visual timer is silent and has an adjustable alarm that can be set to loud or low.
Supplies
Black Sharpies. Need I say more? Here’s a container of 36 so you have a class set for art projects, plus a few extra. Hint: They also make great gifts for colleagues.
Some teachers also swear by the big, chisel-tip Sharpies for anchor charts. Here’s a pack of 4.
I prefer Mr. Sketch markers for writing on chart paper…
… and Expo dry erase markers for writing on the whiteboard…
… or on these dry erase sleeves. This is a pack of 25.
Flair Pens are my favourite marking and note writing pens.
Sharpie Highlighters are the best.
Liquid Chalk Markers are great for making parts of your chalkboard semi-permanent. Students love writing on windows with them. This makes a great literacy centre.
These colour coding Dot Stickers come in 16 colours. Label your classroom library, make literacy games, and colour-code your life with them.
Stick one of these self-adhesive Magnet Squares on the back of a school picture or a business card with your school’s information on it for a functional fridge magnet gift. They’re also great for visual schedules, calendar pieces, and other regularly used items on your whiteboard or chalkboard.
I use sheet protectors for so many different things, but I especially love using them instead of laminating. I keep a binder of math games in sheet protectors and take them out as needed. I keep copies of reading assessments in them. I put a class checklist in them and use a dry erase marker to check off pizza orders and field trip forms. I hang them on walls for changeable posters, learning goals/big ideas, or “4 Corners” prompts.
Amazon Deals on Classroom Toys and Learning Games
Picasso Tiles are magnetic building tiles. They’re my favourite open ended building material and they’re extra fun on a light table.
Plus Plus is a building set that is great for fine motor development, creativity, and focus.
Tegu Blocks are magnetic blocks that are wooden rather than plastic.
Big Hollow Wooden Block Set – I still remember playing with these big blocks when I was in Kindergarten.
Flashlight Friday is a favourite activity in our class each week. We turn off the lights, close the windows, and read independently or with a buddy by flashlight. The #1 rule: When the flashlight is on, it has to be pointing at a book. Here’s a set of 18 flashlights including batteries. (Usually I can get through one year with 1-2 sets of batteries. I have also given the flashlights away at the end of the year as a gift to students.)
Water Beads take sensory play to the next level.
Kinetic Sand is a great way for kids to play with sand inside the classroom without the mess.
